Advanced Care for Complex Wounds

A non-healing or hard-to-heal wound can be difficult to live with and manage. At Massena Hospital's Wound Care Center, we provide advanced, outpatient care for complex wounds so you can regain your health and get back to doing the things you enjoy.

Wounds that take longer than a month to heal may require specialized care. These wounds are considered chronic, and can be caused by:

  • Burn injuries
  • Diabetes
  • Lack of mobility
  • Poor circulation
  • Physical trauma
  • Underlying illnesses

Non-healing wounds affect more than 6.5 million Americans a year. If you are dealing with a chronic wound, you are not alone; St. Lawrence Health can help.

The Wound Care suite is located at Massena Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive, Massena, NY 13662.

Specialized Wound Care in the North Country

Our multidisciplinary team addresses the needs of our patients who have wounds that are not responding to conventional treatment.

Our team develops a personalized plan that matches each patient with techniques that include:

  • Compression Therapy – Uses special bandages to hasten wound healing
  • Total Contact Casting – A localized cast helps evenly distribute weight on the foot's surface, speeding up healing by reducing pressure on the wound
  • Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy – A vacuum pump applies gentle, concentrated pressure on acute and chronic wounds
  • Cellular Tissue Products – Ideal for non-healing wounds that are non-responsive to standard techniques

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment that increases the amount of oxygen in your blood, allowing oxygen to pass more quickly through the plasma into wounds to heal them. HBOT chambers surround patients with 100% oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment that increases the amount of oxygen in your blood, allowing oxygen to pass more quickly through the plasma into wounds to heal them. HBOT chambers surround patients with 100% oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure.

During HBOT, the only sensation you will experience occurs during the pressurization phase. It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach pressure, and the slowly-increasing pressure will push on your eardrums. It is the same feeling you would experience when landing in an airplane or diving to the bottom of a swimming pool. Your hyperbaric nurse will instruct you through different methods of relieving this ear pressure.

HBOT treatment is very safe. Massena Hospital's Wound Care Center has strict procedures that assure your safety and make your treatment comfortable. Before your first treatment, you will be given a thorough orientation, where we will take the time to answer all of your questions and concerns.

Benefits of HBOT Therapy

There is typically no benefit to increasing the level of oxygen in the body for healthy individuals. People with certain medical conditions do, however, benefit from increased levels of oxygen. Those benefits include:

  • Advanced wound healing
  • Increased levels of oxygen delivered to injured tissue
  • Improved infection control
  • Preservation of damaged tissues
