A nephrologist is a medical physician specially trained and licensed in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disorders. You may hear a nephrologist called a “kidney doctor,” and their education takes many years of schooling and additional training–medical school, three years of residency, and then two (or more) years of training in nephrology.
