A Role Model for Rural Healthcare

Potsdam Hospital opened its doors on March 13, 1925 to patients from the surrounding communities. Since that day, its medical and administrative staff have been dedicated to providing community service and exceptional healthcare. Canton-Potsdam Hospital (CPH) is a member hospital of St. Lawrence Health, which serves more than 70,000 people within St. Lawrence County in rural Northern New York.

By 2025, the number of births at CPH is expected to increase by at least 33.5%. The Emergency Department (ED) currently sees approximately 27,000 visits annually. The ED was on track to see an increase of at least 5% or roughly 1,500 patients per year before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, and volumes are now returning to pre-COVID levels.

The Great Care, Right Here campaign will allow us to prepare for these increases in demand and continue providing quality healthcare services to our community.

 Key Campaign Initiatives:

• Modernization and expansion of the Emergency Department, featuring 28 private treatment rooms equipped with cutting edge technology.

• The addition of 60 private/single occupancy rooms, increasing privacy for patients and their families.

• The Obstetrical Unit Expansion project, ensuring high-quality OB services are readily available for new parents in St. Lawrence County and the North Country Region.

• Workforce development through the establishment of the Family Medicine Rural Residency Program and scholarships for employees interested in advancing their career.
