Inpatient Care

Inpatient care is also called acute care: your doctor may decide you need to be hospitalized when your condition needs continuous monitoring. You will be assigned to a bed based on the type of care that your doctor has ordered: our inpatient units include observation beds, critical care, medical/surgical units, and maternity. If you are assigned to a unit besides maternity, your doctor will also decide whether or not you will be cared for by a member of the Hospitalist Program. Hospitalists are members of the medical staff who specialize in the care of hospitalized patients. They stay in continuous contact with your primary care practitioner while you are an inpatient.

Your inpatient care team will also include nursing professionals, case managers who are registered nurses or licensed social workers, housekeepers, and nutritional service representatives. You may also be seen by a physical therapist, nutritionist, and transitional care coordinator. If you are recovering from surgery, your hospitalist or primary care practitioner will coordinate your care with your surgeon. If you have requested a visit from your spiritual leader, you may expect to see him or her at your bedside too. If you have identified yourself as a member of a particular denomination, a member of our spiritual care team may visit you. We are also a teaching environment: you may see students in our hallways or you may be asked to allow them to be a fully supervised part of the care team.

Inpatient rooms are equipped with the latest monitoring technology, flat-screen television sets, and free wifi. When you arrive at your bed, your nurse will orient you to the unit and will write his/her name and the names of other care-team members on a white-board visible at the foot of your bed. It is important that you make your needs known to our care teams so we can deliver the most personalized care possible.

If you have questions or concerns about your inpatient stay, or if you'd like to compliment a caregiver for excellent care, please contact the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Director of Patient Experience at (315) 261-5050 or the GH Social Worker at (315) 535-9362.
