Allergy, Asthma, and Breathing

Services include allergy, asthma, sinus, and immunology medicine; otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat); head and neck surgery; outpatient respiratory testing, education, and monitoring; pulmonology; pulmonary rehabilitation; cardiac rehabilitation; lifestyle modification to help you stop using tobacco; and lung cancer treatment through our Center for Cancer Care. Most services require a referral from your provider.

Normally, our immune system protects us from harmful viruses and bacteria. Sometimes, our bodies can mistake normally harmless substances for dangerous invaders, and the body's defense systems go on the attack unnecessarily. It's like "friendly fire" on the battlefield.

Common triggers include dust mites, pets, mold spores, pollens, and foods, such as peanuts and shellfish.

Accurate allergy diagnosis has three parts:

  1. A detailed allergy history
  2. Allergy testing
  3. Specialist knowledge of the complex relationship between allergy history and testing.

Simply getting an allergy test will leave you with only a partial diagnosis.

Allergy treatments involve three parts:

  1. Avoiding whatever is causing the allergic reaction
  2. Taking medication
  3. Getting Allergy Vaccine Therapy (AVT, also known as "allergy shots")

These three often work together, because avoiding the trigger completely is often not possible, and medications don't provide long-lasting benefit. When allergies interfere with normal functioning and when avoiding the triggers or taking medications are not practical, allergy shots may be right for you.
